Neurodiversity, work structure, and support in Research Software Engineering: an InclusiveRSE and SSI Fellowship survey study
Year: 2026
Type: article
Abstract: Following on from the InclusiveRSE research project "Exploring the Experiences of Marginalised Groups in Research Software Careers", which used an interview-based exploratory approach, this SSI Fellowship project develops a follow-up community survey to support a broader mixed-methods analysis of the experiences of Research Software Engineers (RSEs) with marginalised identities, particularly those who identify as neurodivergent or who have experienced mental health challenges within research software environments. The project also builds on previous community initiatives within the SSI Fellowship programme, including ConveRSE, developed by Mike Simpson, and earlier RSE mental health survey work conducted by Dave Horsfall. The project explores how workplace arrangements, including remote and hybrid working patterns that have become more common in post-COVID research environments, may shape experiences of RSE work. In particular, the survey will examine how factors such as work structure, task switching, flexibility, managerial support, and workplace accommodations interact with neurodiversity-related experiences, including those related to executive functioning. Alongside structured survey questions, there will be open-text responses to qualitatively explore strategies and adaptations that RSEs use to develop sustainable and effective working practices within different workplace environments. The survey will be shared through RSE community channels, including SocRSE communication networks, and the poster will provide a QR code for attendees who wish to take part or share the survey with relevant networks. By complementing ongoing qualitative work within InclusiveRSE, the project aims to contribute evidence and practical insights that may help inform more inclusive working practices and support structures within Research Software Engineering.
