By linking migration to Christian hope, this chapter presents a vision of migration as an opportunity for social dialogue and universal fraternity. It further advocates for the creation of intercultural communities that, by recognizing, respecting, promoting, and defending the rights and duties of all human beings, are able to address the structural and cultural causes of exclusion, insecurity, poverty, and violence that force many people around the world to migrate. The author, currently a bishop in one of the dioceses on the U.S.-Mexico border, maintains that society needs an objective view of migrants—one that understands them not only as people in need, but also as men and women who generate culture, spirituality, and economic and social development.
