Weaving the Beginning: A Textile Model for the Five-Dot Opening Marker on the Phaistos Disc

Year: 2026
Type: preprint
Abstract: The Phaistos Disc bears a distinctive group of five dots at the beginning of the inscription on both faces. While this complex is commonly interpreted as marking the beginning and direction of reading, the specific five-part form of the marker remains unexplained. This paper proposes a textile-based interpretation of its form. The argument begins with independent linguistic and cultural evidence: in Hittite, išḫamāi- “song, melody” has been related to išḫai-/išḫiya- “to bind,” suggesting an early conceptualization of verbal composition as “bound speech”; in archaic Greek poetics, the structural function of the woven starting border has been compared with the prooimion, the ordered beginning of a composition; and Latin ordior and exordium preserve the lexical development from beginning a web or laying the warp to beginning a discourse. Against this background, the five dots of the Phaistos Disc are interpreted as a possible metagraphic remnant of separate units of yarn prior to their integration into a woven structure. A secondary hypothesis considers whether the number five may reflect a limited set of color categories. The paper does not propose a decipherment of the Disc and distinguishes throughout between archaeological fact, established philological parallels, and speculative reconstruction.
