Scoping Review: CUlturally and REgionally Relevant Physical Activity
Year: 2026
Type: other
Abstract: A broad, interdisciplinary body of evidence indicates that physical activities with cultural or regional relevance, including ethnic dance and traditional sports and games, have strong value for health promotion. These practices are popular in communities and well known in Indigenous knowledge systems, lived experiences, and across decades of innovative interdisciplinary research to be of deep meaning for the health and wellbeing of the self, family, community, spirit, and land. How vast the existing evidence base already is, and how strongly these practices resonate with each other and with the theory, values, and core goals of public health, can be hidden in traditional literature search processes. This broad scoping review with multiple phases is designed to find, map, and this interdisciplinary evidence base to showcase the scope and scale of existing work in this area, to support future literature reviews and hypothesis-driven research, and to inspire other work in this area for public health promotion and health equity, locally and globally.
