Mapping Microspicule Technology in Dermatology and Skincare: A Scoping Review Protocol

Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: Objective: The objective of this scoping review is to systematically map existing evidence on microspicule-containing products used in dermatology and skincare. This review aims to catalogue the various types, compositions, and delivery formats of microspicules reported in the literature; describe their intended applications, proposed mechanisms of action, and observed penetration behavior; and summarize study outcomes related to product performance, including skin improvement, safety, and user tolerability. Additionally, this review seeks to identify gaps in the literature and suggest directions for future research. Introduction: Microspicule technology is gaining popularity in cosmetic dermatology as a minimally invasive method for transdermal delivery. Microspicules are increasingly used for applications such as anti-aging, hyperpigmentation, hydration, and scar reduction. Despite their growing commercial presence, there is a lack of comprehensive synthesis of published data. Inclusion criteria: Studies using microspicule-based delivery systems in human, in vitro, or animal models will be included. We will include studies focusing on dermatologic or cosmetic applications using microspicules (marine sponge-derived, hyaluronic acid-based, or other). Methods: A comprehensive search strategy was developed with the help of a librarian from the University of Colorado to find relevant studies in multiple databases, including Embase, Medline (Ovid), and Web of Science. The review will include studies published from 2015 to 2025 with no language restriction. The search will focus on published, peer-reviewed articles, and data extraction of the studies will be performed by two independent reviewers.
