HIGH Horizons - Protocol and ethics approval for health facility adaptation interventions: Evaluation of HIGH Horizons Climate Adaptation Intervention in South Africa and Zimbabwe

Year: 2025
Type: article
Study design: Study Protocol
Abstract: The purpose of this protocol, deliverable D5.4, is to present the methodology for evaluating the HIGH Horizons co-designed climate mitigation and adaptation interventions in South Africa and Zimbabwe. The HIGH Horizons project aims to develop climate adaptation mitigation interventions in healthcare facilities across South Africa and Zimbabwe. The primary focus is on improving the wellbeing, performance, and quality of care provided by healthcare workers. The project integrates interdisciplinary scientific methodologies with stakeholder input to create cost-effective and locally relevant solutions. As part of this approach, a mixed-method baseline study was conducted, in both hot and cold seasons ,in South Africa and Zimbabwe. This baseline study (deliverable D2.10) culminated in the co-design of multi-component climate adaptation interventions in South Africa and Zimbabwe (deliverable D4.8). In parallel facility-based mitigation interventions were developed using the CARBOMICA tool, a resource allocation tool for carbon mitigation interventions in healthcare facilities (deliverable D4.9). Following these activities, an endline study and a process evaluation are proposed to evaluate the effectiveness and the cost-consequences of the multi-component climate adaptation-mitigation interventions in each country.
