Abstract: Solid propellant systems enable challenging lunar and planetary exploration missions even in small size, but there are concerns about cracks inside the propellant in a low-temperature environment. In this study, 3D X-ray CT imaging was performed while cooling the simulated composite propellant with liquid nitrogen. The effect of cooling and shrinkage on the particle filling structure was examined by visualizing the three-dimensional distribution of voids and changes in the filling structure, as well as by tracking individual particles that moved due to temperature changes and visualizing their displacement.
