Requirements and Solutions for Asset Data Sharing in a Forest Industry
Year: 2026
Type: article
Abstract: Forest industry actors are increasingly interested in ecosystem types of operation for sharing data. However, there exist many shortcomings that currently make it difficult to trustworthily share data between different organizations. The purpose of this paper is to identify the data sharing requirements from the viewpoint of forest industry actors and to propose solutions that implement these requirements. Company representatives were interviewed to discover requirements. The role of governance—both data and actor governance—is especially emphasized when data crosses organizational boundaries. Using the axes of centralization, a four-field model of different solution alternatives was developed, consisting of a data and governance matrix, and mapped the requirements to the alternatives to highlight key differences. This enables actors to compare alternatives and to choose the most suitable one. Finally, the transition to a data ecosystem in the Finnish forest industry and the usability of the four-field model are discussed.
