The Symbiotic Grift Economy: Interpretive Custody, Rescue Markets, and the Political Economy of Exit

Year: 2026
Type: article
Abstract: This conceptual essay develops the Symbiotic Grift Economy, a concept originating in Victor P. Amoguez III’s 2026 book Disposable Church, as a framework for examining how high-demand institutions and the secondary markets organized around criticizing, diagnosing, treating, or reversing their effects can both derive value from the same vulnerable subject. Drawing on Michel Foucault’s asylum framework and the history of deprogramming and exit counseling, the paper introduces interpretive custody to describe situations in which another institution claims superior authority to determine what a person’s beliefs, doubts, memories, or objections really mean. The essay distinguishes legitimate assistance from secondary capture and argues that successful exit should ultimately increase the individual’s epistemic autonomy rather than replace one institutional dependency with another
