Invariant Theory as a Framework for Classifying Solvable Competition Problems — E8 Intelligence Research

Year: 2026
Type: preprint
Abstract: FINDING: Invariant theory provides the formal framework for classifying solvable competition problems via group actions and conserved quantities, with recent work extending from reductive to non-reductive groups. | MATH: Core objects: group action \(G \curvearrowright X\), invariant ring \(k[X]^G\), Hilbert's finiteness theorem (for reductive \(G\), \(k[X]^G\) is finitely generated). Non-reductive case: need geometric invariant theory (GIT) quotients \(X/\!/G\) with stability conditions. Euler conserved quantities: for 3D incompressible Euler, new invariants linked to topological degree \(\deg(f)\) of the velocity map — e.g., \(\int_{\Omega} \omega \cdot \nabla \times \omega \, d^3x\) (helicity) and higher-order analogues. | CONNECTION: Reductive groups correspond to compact Lie groups — their root systems are crystallographic (ADE classifications, e.g., \(A_n, D_n, E_6, E_7, E_8\)). The invariant ring's structure under Weyl group action mirrors lattice symmetries. Non-reductive groups Author: Andrew Stewart Caldin, Independent Researcher, UK.
