Learning Wellness Systems for Equity: A Bilingual Systematic Review Protocol to Identify Exemplary Data-to-Action Learning Cycles for Wellbeing
Year: 2026
Type: other
Abstract: Learning Health Systems (LHS) have advanced the use of data system-enabled learning to improve healthcare delivery and health system performance. However, growing scholarship has questioned whether existing approaches sufficiently address community-defined wellbeing, equitable governance, lived experience, and the social, political, cultural, and structural determinants of health. We therefore conceptualize Learning Wellness Systems (LWS) as extending the learning-cycle paradigm beyond clinical improvement to emphasize accountable governance, community benefit, and iterative learning for individual and collective wellbeing. In practice, this may take a variety of forms. We therefore propose a systematic review to identify promising models for equitable, community-centered learning systems, and to synthesize characteristics, governance approaches, and learning mechanisms. Our objectives are to identify and characterize LWS, synthesize their governance and learning processes, and develop a preliminary typology of Learning Wellness Systems. We describe our eligibility criteria, search strategy, data extraction procedures, and plans for descriptive, thematic, and configurational synthesis.
