Uncovering the Chemical Profile and Anti-Aging Potential of Lobularia arabica Using a Yeast Oxidative Stress Model

Year: 2026
Type: article
Abstract: The family Brassicaceae is a rich source of bioactive phytochemicals, particularly glucosinolates and phenolic compounds, known for their antioxidant and anti-aging effects. As Lobularia arabica had received limited scientific attention, its phytochemical profile and antioxidant potential were investigated in this study. The metabolites of total alcoholic extract, ethyl acetate, methylene chloride and petroleum ether soluble fractions were identified by ultra high performance liquid chromatography coupled to tandem mass spectrometry (UPLC-ESI-MS/MS). A total of fifty-nine metabolites were identified in both positive and negative modes, including glucosinolates, flavonoids and other phenolics, amino acids and organic acids. A budding yeast (Saccharomyces cerevisiae) model expressing green fluorescent protein (GFP) was employed to test the antioxidant capacity of the L. arabica total alcoholic extract. Functionally, the ethyl acetate soluble fraction, the aqueous fraction and the total alcoholic extract restored 89.2%, 69.5% and 85% of GFP fluorescence at one-quarter of the MIC of the tested samples. The results highlight the potential anti-aging applications of the L. arabica extract.
