Abstract: In the scientific literature the arsenal of clinical, experimental and pathological data devoted to bleeding from the varicosely dilated veins of the distal part of the esophagus in liver cirrhosis and portal hypertension is very large. This article presents a review and analysis of the contemporary literature on the morphology and architectonics of the blood and lymphatic vessels of the distal part of the esophagus and on the varicose changes of its veins in liver cirrhosis and portal hypertension. The review also includes an analysis of the literature concerning the innervation of the blood vessels of the esophagus.
