Hilbert's 14th Problem: Non-Reductive Counterexamples and Reductive Stratification — E8 Intelligence Research

Year: 2026
Type: preprint
Abstract: FINDING: Hilbert's 14th Problem — the finite generation of invariant rings — remains the central obstruction; modern work splits between non-reductive group actions (where counterexamples exist) and structural decompositions (Lusztig's stratification, Brauer's real/complex/quaternionic character counting). | MATH: Hilbert 14: Is \(R^G\) finitely generated for \(G\) acting on \(R = k[x_1,\dots,x_n]\)? — False for non-reductive \(G\) (Nagata counterexample, 1959). Lusztig: reductive \(G = \bigsqcup_{i=1}^N \Sigma_i\), with \(\Sigma_1 = G_{\mathrm{reg}}\) (largest stratum). Brauer: count of character types under antilinear involution — real (orthogonal), complex (unitary), quaternionic (symplectic) — generalized to Dyson's tenfold way (10 = 2×5, tied to Bott periodicity \(\mathbb{Z}_2 \times \mathbb{Z}_8\)). | CONNECTION: The tenfold way's 10 = 2 × 5 — the 5-fold symmetry of Penrose tilings and icosahedral root systems \(H_3, H_4\) (non-crystallographic, yet appearing in quasicrystals).
