The Uncomputable Halting Probability: Chaitin's Omega and Algorithmic Randomness — E8 Intelligence Research

Year: 2026
Type: preprint
Abstract: FINDING: Chaitin's Omega (Ω) is a definable real number encoding the halting probability of a universal Turing machine, whose binary expansion is algorithmically random and computationally irreducible. | MATH: Ω = Σ_{p halts} 2^{-|p|}, where p ranges over self-delimiting programs; Ω is uncomputable (no finite algorithm can output its digits), normal in base 2, and its first N bits require a program of length ~N to generate (algorithmic complexity ~N). | CONNECTION: No direct geometric ratio (0.382, 0.618, 1.618) emerges. However, Ω's structure is deeply tied to the halting set — a Π₁⁰-complete set — which is isomorphic to the lattice of recursively enumerable sets under the Medvedev/Muchnik degrees, a non-distributive lattice with no crystallographic symmetry. The self-delimiting coding (prefix-free set) forms a Kraft inequality: Σ 2^{-|p|} ≤ 1, which is a dyadic partition of unity — a binary tree structure, not a golden-ratio harmony. | DEPTH: 9 — This is a profound limitative result: Author: Andrew Stewart Caldin, Independent Researcher, UK.
