The Cross Before the Flag: Christianity, Colonialism, and Japan's Refusal
Year: 2026
Type: article
Abstract: This essay rereads Japan’s suppression of Christianity as a collision between two coercive structures: a transoceanic religious-commercial order capable of entering conscience before territorial conquest, and a consolidating state that answered perceived danger with surveillance, torture, forced apostasy, and death. Moving from the Japanese slave trade and the San Felipe incident to Fucan Habian’s critique of hell, the 1614 prohibition, the fumi-e, and Shūsaku Endō’s Silence, J.C. Howard rejects both a triumphalist martyr story and a romantic anti-colonial one. This journal edition includes labeled editorial credibility notes, source boundaries, eleven historical and scholarly references, and a designed archival PDF.
