A total-energy spectrometer for ultracold neutrons
Year: 2026
Type: article
Abstract: In this work, we report on simulation studies of a proposed spectrometer for ultracold neutrons (UCN) that combines a compound parabolic concentrator (CPC) surface with an adjustable-height absorbing ceiling. Our results indicate that such a device, operated in a flow-through mode, can be used to efficiently measure the UCN total-energy spectrum. The spectrometer resolution Δ E is energy independent and scales with the radius a of the CPC opening: e.g., a = 3 cm corresponds to Δ E ≈ 1 neV .
