Superconducting detectors enhancement of quantum communication: practical cases

Year: 2026
Type: conference-paper
Abstract: Quantum key distribution (QKD) is considered among the safest method to secure communications against the potential attacks of a quantum computer. However, commercial solutions exhibit some limitations related to the performance of some components, such as the detectors. In this work, the use of a relatively novel detector, namely the Superconducting Nanowires Single Photon Detector (SNSPD), easily enhances some metrics of the QKD, such as the key exchange distance. We combine the SNSPDs with commercial QKD systems extending the highest supported losses to 55 dB.
