PERSON — NOT-person — LINE A Guide to Lines That Refuse to Stay Put
Year: 2026
Type: article
Abstract: This guide begins with unease about how PERSON describes and responds to NOT-person: why invitegreater capability, then qualify, resist, or defend against its arrival? Questions generate the route, withPERSON, NOT-person, and LINE carried only as provisional handles. Historical wandering takes usthrough ancient poems, machinery and dependence, printing, boilers, railways, and keyboards. Along theway, motions become noticeable: revolving, evolving, reforming, recycling, reclaiming, hardening, migrating, naturalizing, and denaturalizing. Roadside encounters with Wellcome, Ipsos, and Pew, and adetour among professors and students, offer clues and counterquestions rather than separate blocks ofevidence or endorsements of a theory. They complicate who knows, trusts, permits, uses, and judges, andwhat each boundary is doing. The journey itself becomes the map, visible only when we look back. Thework deliberately ends with questions to pursue rather than a finished theory, as NOT-person emerges asa possible LINE-checker that may also check the LINE-keeper
