Assessment and experiences of care-seeking behavior among Chinese older persons with knee osteoarthritis: a mixed methods study

Year: 2026
Type: article
Study design: Observational Study
Abstract: As knee osteoarthritis (OA) becomes more prevalent and poses health risks to older adults, understanding care-seeking behavior (CSB) is critical for addressing future healthcare needs. This study aimed to enhance knowledge of CSB by integrating assessments and perceptions. Using a convergent mixed methods design, the CSB of 239 individuals aged 60 or older with knee OA was assessed via the General Help Seeking Questionnaire, and 10 participants were interviewed about their experiences. Quantitative data were analyzed statistically, while qualitative data underwent content analysis. Results showed three key areas: professional CSB primarily involves seeking help from hospital-based physicians; informal CSB includes assistance from family, drugstores, friends, neighbors, and folk treatments; most elderly individuals initially prefer self-heal at home rather than seeking external help. Chinese older adults with knee OA exhibit both professional and informal CSB, though delayed CSB remains common. The results of this study hold significant implications for health policies and the delivery of health services to the elderly population.
