Algae Bioreactor Performance Under Different Light Wavelengths
Year: 2026
Type: article
Abstract: The rising concentration of carbon dioxide (CO2) in the atmosphere is a pressing challenge since it is a major contributor to climate change. Algae, a group of photosynthetic organisms, have attracted attention for their potential to absorb atmospheric CO2, particularly in industrial photobioreactors. This work experimentally evaluates the effects of light conditions at different wavelengths on algae growth performance using a bubble column reactor. The effect of blue, red, and green light on the growth of the algae species Chlorella vulgaris is evaluated. The results showed that blue light is the most effective in improving algae growth. The findings also confirm similar studies reported in the literature. Of the color wavelengths considered, the green color shows the lower performance in terms of algae growth. This study suggests that blue light should be used for enhancing algae growth in industrial bioreactors.
