Abstract: New excavations at Widgingarri Shelter 1 in northwest Australia took place in 2022. The work confirmed the presence of stone artefacts beneath the level reached during the previous excavation undertaken by O’Connor in 1985, extending the earliest evidence for artefact presence at the site to ≥55 ± 4 ka. The archaeological deposit contains materials spanning Marine Isotope Stage 3 through the last glacial period and into the Holocene, providing a remarkable record of Aboriginal cultural continuity and adaptation in the Kimberley. This paper presents an overview of the recent excavation in 2022, the chronostratigraphic sequence, and detailed data on the stone artefact assemblages.
