Guyon Chung’s residential architecture and the meaning of dwelling

Year: 2026
Type: article
Abstract: This study examines Guyon Chung’s residential architecture, which has received limited scholarly attention despite its significance. Widely recognized in Korea as a “public architect”, Chung also devoted considerable attention to the concept of dwelling and expressed deep concern over the Korean reality in which the market value of housing outweighs the value of dwelling itself. In response, he sought to address the “crisis of dwelling” by creating houses in which the authentic value of dwelling could be realized – houses that allow inhabitants to fully experience their surroundings as meaningful places, serve as intimate spaces of stability and cosmic resonance, and embody the principle of communal living. In a sense, however, his emphasis on the essence of dwelling – placeness, cosmicity, and communality – may raise critical questions about the continued relevance of such ideals in contemporary society. Nevertheless, it can be argued that Guyon Chung’s house design and theory, as a form of “critical practice”, hold substantial meaning, as they clearly demonstrate the social value of the recovery of dwelling while actively incorporating concepts drawn from traditional Korean architecture. Moreover, his public-minded approach to residential architecture offers critical insights for contemporary architectural practice in Korea, often constrained by clients and capital pressures.
