Baire Category Theorem: The Topological Dichotomy Between Meager and Comeager Sets — E8 Intelligence Research

Type: preprint
Abstract: FINDING: Baire category theorem establishes a fundamental dichotomy between "meager" (topologically negligible) and "comeager" (topologically substantial) sets, structuring the limits of what can be known or constructed in complete metric spaces. | MATH: Baire space = complete metric space where countable intersections of dense open sets are dense. Meager = countable union of nowhere dense sets; comeager = complement of meager. Key theorem: In a Baire space, no comeager set is meager. Golden ratio appears via the Cantor set (nowhere dense, uncountable, Hausdorff dimension log(2)/log(3) ≈ 0.6309) and via the middle-α Cantor sets where α = 1/φ² yields dimension log(2)/log(φ²) ≈ 0.440 — a direct geometric realization of φ in topological structure. | CONNECTION: The dichotomy meager/comeager mirrors the golden ratio's structural split: 0.382 (meager-like, sparse) vs 0.618 (comeager-like, dominant) — the Baire theorem guarantees that "typical" (comeager) properties are overwhelmingly preval Author: Andrew Stewart Caldin, Independent Researcher, UK.
