Type: preprint
Abstract: FINDING: Cyclotomic field Q(ζ₁₀) provides the exact algebraic integer framework for Penrose tiling inflation, where the golden ratio φ = (1+√5)/2 = 2cos(π/5) is the inflation multiplier. | MATH: Q(ζ₁₀) = Q(√5, i) — degree 4 extension. The ring of integers contains ℤ[φ] where φ = (1+√5)/2, φ' = (1−√5)/2 = −1/φ. The inflation multiplier for Penrose tilings is φ (or its square φ² = φ+1 = 2.618...). Key identity: φ² = φ + 1, and φ⁻¹ = φ − 1 = 0.618... The cyclotomic polynomial Φ₁₀(x) = x⁴ − x³ + x² − x + 1, whose roots are primitive 10th roots of unity. The golden ratio emerges as 2cos(π/5) = φ, and 2cos(2π/5) = φ⁻¹ = 0.618... | CONNECTION: Direct — Penrose tilings exhibit 5-fold rotational symmetry (crystallographically forbidden in periodic lattices), and their inflation/deflation operation multiplies tile sizes by φ. The algebraic integer φ in ℤ[ζ₁₀] generates the self-similarity. The ratio 0.618 (φ⁻¹) appears as the small-to-large tile ratio in Penrose rhombi (acute angle 72° = 2π/5, o Author: Andrew Stewart Caldin, Independent Researcher, UK.
