Ron's Rules for Tools
Year: 2014
Type: article
Abstract: "Ron's Rules for Tools" is an informal set of design rules for developers building interactive software tools for translational clinical research, first presented at the IMIC workshop at MICCAI 2014 and maintained for many years on the 3D Slicer wiki. The rules distill, from the perspective of the end user, what makes a research tool robust and widely adopted: robustness across workflows, working on real users' data and hardware, minimizing interaction cost, limiting user-facing parameters, and prioritizing speed. A short method for making algorithms robust (a development/testing case library) is included. This record provides a stable, citable, archival version of the document.
