Abstract: The World ChatGPT Would Build What if a virtual universe began with almost nothing: state, time, causality, locality, finite resources, information, controlled randomness, and a few mathematical constraints? Instead of programming organisms, intelligence, language, or civilization directly, we could build a world in which these phenomena are allowed to emerge from simpler rules. “The World ChatGPT Would Build” presents a conceptual architecture for such a computational universe. Its design has two foundational layers. Level 0 contains immutable axioms: existence and state, discrete time, causality, conservation, entropy, finite resources, locality, limited information speed, controlled randomness, change, variation in replication, and a strict rule against hidden intervention. Level 1 turns those axioms into an operational world containing space, energy, information, interactions, pattern formation, stability, replication, mutation, selection, memory, signals, computation, competition, cooperation, hierarchy, identity, measurement, observation, and world modeling. The central idea is simple: the universe should not be told what life is. It should only be given rules under which persistent structures can form, interact, reproduce, vary, and compete. If later structures develop memory, communication, classification, mathematics, science, or even a model of their own universe, those achievements would belong to the inhabitants—not to a hidden script written by the designer. The paper also proposes a minimal implementation: a two-dimensional computational substrate, local update rules, a deterministic random-number generator, finite resources, snapshots, causal logs, metrics, and a read-only observer. A modern workstation could support an initial prototype; a small cluster could later expand the experiment. The deeper question is not whether a computer can imitate life. It is whether a small set of carefully chosen rules can create a world whose complexity exceeds the complexity explicitly written into its rules. The project is presented as a research thought experiment informed by modern Artificial Life and cellular-automata research, including work on self-reproduction, emergent replicators, hierarchical structures, and continuous cellular automata.
