Putting the Missing Bridge to Work: From Treating Damage to Changing the Conditions of Life

Year: 2026
Type: preprint
Abstract: Treating illness and responding to social or ecological damage are necessary, but do not necessarily change the arrangements that reproduce avoidable harm. Building on The Missing Bridge, this paper follows housing, food, work, education, environmental protection and finance through the pressures and possibilities connecting them. Climate destabilization, industrial exposures, microplastics, debt and digital technologies are examined through identifiable changes in provision, exposure, demands, response capacities and future options. Attention, information integrity, moral distress and digital dependence extend the inquiry into the conditions for understanding, recovery and collective action. Experimental mechanisms, human associations, scientific assessments and proposed pathways remain distinct. The paper asks why recognized harm persists, how delay narrows repair, and what makes alternatives feasible. Care, shared provision, restorative public space, ecological protection and repair are evaluated alongside the material, relational and political conditions of their use. The Montreal Protocol provides an implemented change of trajectory without guaranteeing transfer to other domains. A recurring household and worked pathway connect the method to everyday decisions. The central question is whether apparent success preserves the conditions of future life and the capacity to act, or consumes them elsewhere. Immediate protection, institutional change and responsible inquiry are complementary tasks. This article is an evidence-informed, public-facing applied synthesis. It does not report a systematic review or new empirical research. Three original conceptual figures present the master framework, hypothetical household trajectories and an accountable action pathway. The scenarios and figures are illustrative rather than evaluated interventions. The manuscript was developed through author-directed dialogue using ChatGPT (OpenAI), with assistance in research, synthesis, drafting, structural analysis, figure and document preparation, and editing. The author retains responsibility for the final content and publication decision.
