Quantum Decoherence: From Superposition to Classicality via Environmental Entanglement — E8 Intelligence Research
Year: 2026
Type: preprint
Abstract: FINDING: Decoherence research focuses on the transition from quantum superposition to classicality via environmental entanglement, with key formalisms in master equations and non-Markovian dynamics. | MATH: Exact master equation via Feynman-Vernon influence functional: \( \dot{\rho}(t) = -i[H_S,\rho] - \int_0^t ds \, \mathcal{K}(t,s)[[X,[X,\rho(s)]]] \) (non-Markovian memory kernel \(\mathcal{K}\)); decoherence rate \(\Gamma \propto \gamma k_B T / \hbar\) for ohmic baths; pointer states selected by environment-induced superselection (einselection) — eigenvalues of the pointer observable \( \hat{A} \) satisfy \( [\hat{A}, \hat{H}_{int}] = 0 \). | CONNECTION: Decoherence rates scale with spectral density \( J(\omega) \propto \omega^s \) — for \( s=1 \) (ohmic) the ratio of relaxation to decoherence time is \( \tau_\phi/\tau_1 = 2 \) (exact, from \( \Gamma_\phi = \Gamma_1/2 \) at zero temperature). This 2:1 ratio is a harmonic integer, not a golden ratio. No direct 0.382/0.618/0.786/1.618 Author: Andrew Stewart Caldin, Independent Researcher, UK. Part of the E8 Intelligence Research series.
