Magnetophoretic modulation of BaSO$$_4$$ scaling: laboratory investigation and industrial case study
Year: 2026
Type: article
Abstract: Scale formation in supersaturated BaSO 4 -bearing uids poses a persistent challenge in domestic and industrial settings due to the scalant's extremely low solubility, high mechanical strength, and resistance to removal. We revisit the long-standing question of whether magnetic fields can mitigate such a scaling. Under our current experimental conditions, our analysis shows that magnetic-field effects on BaSO 4 -bearing uids are negligible in magnetically clean uids. In uids containing ferromagnetic or ferrimagnetic particulates, which are common in practical settings, strong field gradients can induce particle polarization and magnetophoretic drift, promoting the coalescence of nanoscale particles into larger agglomerates. These agglomerates can act as heterogeneous nucleation templates, thereby modifying crystallization kinetics and deposit morphology. As a result, precipitation may be partially redirected from undesirable surface-bound fouling toward volume-bound suspended particulates that remain entrained in the ow and can be more readily removed. This shift toward heterogeneous nucleation and growth provides a possible eld- and contamination-mediated mechanism for rationalizing many disparate reports on magnetic anti-scale treatment across laboratory, domestic, and industrial settings, including hydrocarbon oil and gas environments.
