Supplementary data for the manuscript "Dietary Sodium Restriction Alters Gut Microbial Fermentation and Reduces Host Energy Harvest" submitted to the American Journal of Physiology–Gastrointestinal and Liver Physiology.

Abstract: This study examined the effects of dietary sodium deprivation on gut microbial composition, microbial functional potential, short-chain fatty acid production, and host physiology in male Sprague–Dawley rats. Animals were maintained on sodium-sufficient or sodium-deprived diets for 7 days, followed by shotgun metagenomic profiling, functional pathway analysis, fecal short-chain fatty acid quantification, and physiological phenotyping. The supplementary materials deposited here provide supporting data for the manuscript, including functional metagenomic analyses, differential microbial abundance data, and fecal short-chain fatty acid measurements. These files include Supplemental Figures S1–S3 and Supplemental Tables ST1–ST3, together with the corresponding figure and table legends. The deposited materials support the conclusion that dietary sodium availability is associated with changes in gut microbial ecology and fermentation, including reductions in several fecal short-chain fatty acids, and with accompanying changes in host energy balance.
