The Cybernetics of Intentional Friction: Cognitive Agency, Game-Theoretic Traps in Seamless UX, and the Physicalization of Digital Sovereignty

Abstract: The dominant paradigm in Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) and consumer softwareengineering posits the systematic elimination of interaction resistance—termed "SeamlessUX"—as the primary index of architectural optimization. This paper presents a structuralcritique of frictionless interaction models across neurobiological, game-theoretic, cybernetic, and infrastructural dimensions. We demonstrate that zero-friction interfaces actively inducecognitive passivity, degrade supervisory prefrontal control, and externalize severe tail risksonto human operators, culminating in systemic socio-technical vulnerabilities such as MultiFactor Authentication (MFA) fatigue exploits and Automated Transfer System (ATS) bankingcompromises.Applying Daniel Kahneman’s dual-process cognitive architecture and Donald Broadbent’slearning modes, we evaluate how sensory habituation and motor automation erodeoperational vigilance. We formalize interface design as a non-cooperative game, demonstrating that absent regulatory intervention, platform market competition produces aPareto-suboptimal Nash Equilibrium characterized by stripped verification checkpoints andasymmetric risk externalization. We expose the hidden operational expenditure (OPEX)inflation of flat friction curves, proving that unmitigated seamlessness shifts costs tocustomer support escalation, fraud litigation, and catastrophic user churn. Applying W. RossAshby’s Law of Requisite Variety, we establish why one-dimensional software confirmationchannels cannot regulate high-variety socio-technical disturbance vectors, extending thiscybernetic limit to synthetic, homogeneous AI testing environments. Finally, we propose theCybernetic Triad of Intentional Friction: a structural design framework establishing spatialmotor discontinuity, orthogonal dimensional variety, non-linear risk-scaled friction, andhardware-enforced boundaries to restore cognitive agency and local data sovereignty insafety-critical computing environments.
