Antikythera Mechanism's Gear Ratios: No Evidence of A2 Root System in Cuneiform Sources — E8 Intelligence Research

Year: 2026
Type: preprint
Abstract: FINDING: The search results are dominated by popular-media reconstructions of the Antikythera Mechanism (a geared astronomical calculator) and one unrelated lattice QCD paper; no direct evidence of A2 root system or hexagonal lattice symmetry in cuneiform sources is provided. | MATH: Antikythera uses gear ratios approximating the Metonic cycle (19 years ≈ 235 lunations → ratio 235/19 = 12.368421...), the Saros cycle (223 synodic months), and the Callippic cycle (76 years = 4×19). The gear trains encode ratios like 64:38, 48:24, 127:53 (for the Moon's anomalistic motion), and 53:127 — the latter pair approximates the ratio of the anomalistic to synodic month (27.55455/29.53059 = 0.933085... ≈ 53/56.8, but 127/53 = 2.3962 is a key gear pair). The lattice QCD paper (arXiv:0710.4339) is a red herring — no geometric content relevant here. | CONNECTION: The Antikythera gear ratios do not explicitly use 0.382, 0.618, 1.618, or 2.618. However, the Metonic ratio 235/19 = 12.3684 is close to 12 Author: Andrew Stewart Caldin, Independent Researcher, UK. Part of the E8 Intelligence Research series. Platform: e8intelligence.com
