A Voltage Amplitude Regulation Based Current Limit Strategy for GFM Devices

Year: 2026
Type: conference-paper
Abstract: Grid-forming control devices have become increasingly important in power systems with inertia and damping support to the grid. However, it is difficult for power electronic switches to withstand the surge current caused by short-circuit faults. Therefore, current limit strategies must be applied to ensure safe operation. Traditional strategies primarily focus on limiting current to achieve fault ride-through capability, which weakens the support provided by the device. This paper proposes a voltage amplitude regulation based current limit strategy that regulates internal voltage while stabilizing frequency. The proposed strategy limits the current while maintaining a slow variation of the internal voltage frequency. The results demonstrate that the proposed strategy limits the current within the tolerable range while providing effective frequency support.
