Optimizing Missouri's Preparation for the Next Pandemic: Lessons Learned from COVID-19: Part 2.

Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: The Pandemic of Our Lifetime F rom March 2020 to May 2023 our public health system and its workers, who had previously labored in relative obscurity, were thrust into the spotlight during the once-in-a-lifetime COVID-19 crisis in Missouri.Public health actions to reduce the spread of disease saved lives, as discussed in the first article in this series, but became deeply unpopular and generated heated opposition as the pandemic persisted. This second article will assess the history and structure of the public health system, the many barriers that stymied optimal implementation of its pandemic mitigation best practices, and lessons learned regarding areas for improvement. Now is the time to seize the opportunity to act upon one of the most important lessons from the pandemic: we need to re-empower and strengthen our public health system.Future generations will be counting on us.
