Epitaxial Growth, Electronic Transitions, and Size-Dependent Cavity Modes of WS2@ReSe2 Core–Shell Nanotubes

Year: 2026
Type: preprint
Abstract: WS2@ReSe2 core–shell nanotubes were synthesized by van der Waals epitaxy, representing the first highly crystalline nanotubular architecture incorporating ReSe2. High-resolution electron microscopy and 4D-STEM diffraction reveal the epitaxial growth of crystalline ReSe2 multilayers that conformally wrap multiwall WS2 nanotubes while maintaining atomically sharp interfaces. Raman and photoluminescence spectroscopy confirm electronic coupling between the constituent phases. Cryogenic low-loss EELS resolves excitonic transitions in both WS2 and ReSe2 and reveals additional interface-localized subgap excitations associated with cavity-confined modes enabled by the hollow nanotube geometry and strongly diameter-dependent. Cathodoluminescence directly visualizes simultaneous emission from both the WS2 core and ReSe2 shell. These findings establish ReSe2 as a new member of the inorganic nanotube family and demonstrate the potential of anisotropic core–shell nanotubes as platforms for investigating strain-induced optoelectronic phenomena. While the work primarily focuses on synthesis and basic characterization, it invites follow-up to explore its application potential in devices, photodetectors, or optoelectronics.
