Abstract: The development of a new class of macrocycles is a primary issue in supramolecular chemistry. We here report the synthesis, spectroscopic properties, and host-guest functions of chiral, rhombus-shaped macrocyclic oligoimides 1, denoted as trapacycles. Trapacycle (+)-1 could be readily synthesized by the condensation of 9,10-dihydro-9,10-ethanoanthracenebased tetracarboxylic dianhydride 2 with (1S,2S)-cyclohexane-1,2-diamine D-tartrate. Its enantiomer (–)-1 could be analogously accessed from 2 and (1R,2R)-cyclohexane-1,2-diamine L-tartrate. The solid-state crystalline structures of 1 showed intrinsic rhombic shape pores and extrinsic pores. These pores were found to accommodate guest solvent molecules. Furthermore, 1 adsorbed iodine vapor in the solid state and accommodated naphthalenes in organic solvents.
