Abstract: Liquid organic hydrogen carriers (LOHCs) are a promising option for hydrogen storage, but their transportation and long-term storage are complicated by sloshing, leakage, evaporation, and the associated safety issues. They are hard to gelate or solidify using conventional gelators due to factors such as steric hinderance and/or the lack of pi-pi conjugation within their molecular structure. Here, we report a one-pot reversible solidification strategy that converts hydrogenated LOHCs into free-standing monolithic solids without compromising their hydrogen-storage performance. The solidified carriers can prevent sloshing during transportation and potential leakage upon tank fail. The vapor pressure and fire intensity of LOHCs are reduced by 66% and 16.5%, respectively. As a result, their mass retention rate increased by 2.8-fold after one week of open storage and their mass loss rate is reduced by 3.4-fold after 24 hours of vigorous vibration compared with regular LOHCs.
