Guidance and Counseling Strategies of Filipino Sped Teachers in Supporting Learners with Disabilities: Basis for An Enhanced Counseling Support Framework

Year: 2026
Type: article
Study design: Observational Study
Abstract: This study examined the counseling practices and utilization of guidance and counseling strategies of Filipino Special Education (SpEd) teachers in addressing the academic, social, and emotional needs of students with disabilities. Specifically, it determined the level of counseling practices in terms of individualized instruction and remediation, Individualized Education Plans (IEPs), assistive technology and digital tools, peer teaching, and assessments and feedback. It also assessed the extent of utilization of guidance and counseling strategies in terms of teacher-student relationships, behavior management, student academic performance and engagement, and emotional adjustment and self-confidence. Furthermore, it examined significant differences based on age, sex, educational attainment, and teaching experience and determined the relationships between the two major variables. The study employed a quantitative descriptive-correlational research design involving 82 Filipino SpEd teachers. Data were collected through a structured questionnaire and analyzed using frequency, percentage, mean, t-test, one-way ANOVA, and Pearson product-moment correlation. Findings revealed that counseling practices were consistently employed, with all dimensions interpreted as Always. Guidance and counseling strategies were likewise strongly utilized across all dimensions. Age, sex, educational attainment, and teaching experience did not significantly influence academic counseling practices. However, age and educational attainment significantly influenced teacher-student relationships. Significant positive relationships were found between several academic counseling practices and guidance and counseling strategies, particularly individualized instruction, IEP implementation, peer teaching, and assessment and feedback. The study concluded that academic counseling and guidance strategies are interconnected in providing comprehensive support to students with disabilities. A Counseling Support Enhancement Framework was proposed to strengthen individualized, academic, behavioral, social, and emotional support through measurable interventions and appropriate resource allocation.
