Can’t Duck This: Algorithmic Bias in Discovery Systems

Abstract: Grounded in the work of Matthew Reidsma, Safiya Noble, Emily Drabinski, Kevin Seeber, and many others, this session will explore both the methods and results of a student-faculty research collaboration investigating how algorithmic bias may manifest in search results in Ex Libris’ Primo, Primo VE, and Summon discovery interfaces. The researchers will facilitate a discussion about the research, its findings, and what change and advocacy in this area might look like.
