Fiber-Optic Frequency and Time Distribution for Precision Timing and Synchronization in ESA’s ESTRACK Network

Year: 2026
Type: conference-paper
Abstract: High-performance frequency and time distribution is a fundamental requirement for coherent radio-frequency systems, including radio observatories, space tracking networks, and other distributed ground segments [1].Preserving the spectral purity and long-term stability of ultra-stable clock references during distribution is critical, as any excess phase noise or phase drift directly limits achievable coherence. Here, we present the architecture and operational performance validation of ESA's second-generation Frequency and Timing (F&T) system [2], developed to deliver ultra-stable frequency and time references across distributed ground station infrastructures using actively stabilized fiber-optic links.
