From outputs to outcomes? Examining the evolution of social impact reporting in UK major sport events [Abstract]
Year: 2026
Type: conference-paper
Abstract: Aim and Research Questions This research examines how social impact claims and reporting practices are constructed, evidenced, and evolved within documentary materials relating to major sport events in the UK across four cycles aligned to the Rio (2013 - 2016), Tokyo (2017 - 2021), Paris (2022 - 2024), and Los Angeles (2025 - present) Olympic and Paralympic Games. It asks: 1. How are social impact claims constructed and evidenced within major sport event reporting across the four cycles? 2. What content trends and changes occur across cycles? The project frames these questions as an opportunity to demonstrate how a Theory of Change (ToC) approach can strengthen evidential claims, support longitudinal assessment, and encourage more policy relevant, equitable reporting.
