Snake Tongue Flicking Odorant Capture Analysis

Year: 2026
Type: dataset
Abstract: This dataset comprises three-dimensional, time-resolved particle tracking velocimetry measurements of the flow field generated by an oscillating, dynamically scaled physical model of a snake tongue. The work investigates how tongue-tip oscillation entrains fluid from outside the tongue's direct path of motion — a mechanism proposed to enhance vortex-driven chemosensory sampling in snakes. Data were collected across six experimental cases spanning three tongue-fork branching angles (2°, 10°, and 20°) and two Reynolds numbers (27 and 60), representative of the kinematic regimes snakes use during tongue-flicking. The dataset includes the geometry, the motion profile, the pathlines pickle file (time resolved fluid velocity field) for case Re = 27, branching angle 20°. The method to process these is outlined in the accompanying publication [TBD]. Raw data (images) can be made available on request.
