The expression of early computational thinking in Grade 1: An analysis of integrated STREAM activities with Blue-Bot robots.
Year: 2026
Type: conference-paper
Abstract: Research problem: in Grade 1, robots are often used as attractive tools, yet it is not always clear what kind of thinking becomes visible in pupils' work. Research aim: to reveal how early computational thinking appeared in integrated STREAM activities with Blue-Bot robots. Research methods: classroom action research, document analysis, descriptive statistics, and qualitative content analysis. Key results: the clearest signs were sequencing and debugging; pupils found it harder to generalise and to turn a route into a short verbal problem. Conclusions: computational thinking in Grade 1 becomes most visible when programming is linked with mathematics, reading, discussion, and shared checking of solutions.
