Classification of Four-Dimensional Matrices via Complex-Type Representations

Type: article
Abstract: This study investigates the structural classification of real $4\times4$ matrices by analyzing all possible sign and conjugation patterns arising from their block decomposition. Starting from $1024$ potential configurations, algebraic consistencyconditions reduce the candidates to $128$, and further structural constraints yield $32$ admissible patterns. These $32$ patterns collapse into six canonical multiplication types, revealing that multiple distinct matrix realizations can share the same algebraic multiplication structure. A key component of the classification is the identification of three canonical complex-type $2\times2$ blocks: \[A=\begin{pmatrix}Z_1 & -Z_2 \\Z_2 & Z_1\end{pmatrix},\qquadB=\begin{pmatrix}Z_1 & -\overline{Z_2} \\\overline{Z_2} & Z_1\end{pmatrix},\qquadC=\begin{pmatrix}\overline{Z_1} & -Z_2 \\Z_2 & \overline{Z_1}\end{pmatrix}.\] These three forms serve as canonical representatives for all complex-type substructures under basis change and conjugation placement. Using these blocks, the full $4\times4$ patterns are systematically classified, revealing the existence of multiple quaternion-type realizations and several commutative structures that do not appear in classical algebraic treatments. The results provide a new matrix-pattern-based taxonomy of four-dimensional algebraic structures, extending beyond traditional complex and quaternion representations and offering a unified framework for understanding their underlying multiplicative behavior.
