What are Dementia and its Variants? Neuropsychiatric Assessment and Diagnostic Criteria (Cognitive Impairment: Neuropsychiatric Assessment of Dementia and its Variants)
Year: 2026
Type: article
Abstract: Dementia is recognised as one of the diseases of old age, arising from the increasing proportion of the global population reaching advanced ages. This psychiatric condition, whose prevalence is growing day by day, is also known from research to be capable of commencing after the age of 65. Whilst it is not one of the natural consequences of ageing, genetic factors, mental disorders (fear, anxiety, etc.) and lifestyle all play a significant role. In this condition, which causes cognitive impairment, death may occur in the later stages. Whilst it may be accompanied by numerous psychotic symptoms, concrete manifestations such as irritability, agitation, shouting, memory loss, difficulties with calculation, and, in later stages, getting lost in familiar surroundings are also among the most serious health problems experienced by elderly individuals.
