This study aimed to analyze instructional practices related to leveraging student thinking during classroom discussions in middle school mathematics lessons by examining the nature of thinking evident in students’ responses, how teachers respond to students’ mathematical ideas and solutions, and how this thinking is leveraged within classroom discussions. Adopting a qualitative multiple-case study design, the study involved four middle school mathematics teachers from the Jeddah Education Directorate and 108 students in their classes, distributed across the four cases as 27, 27, 25, and 29 students, respectively. Data were collected through observations of 12 classroom lessons and the analysis of 54 classroom episodes and were analyzed using thematic and cross-case analysis. The findings revealed the predominance of instrumental and partial thinking in most student responses, with relational thinking appearing only to a limited extent. The results also indicated variation in teachers’ responses to student thinking, ranging from probing and interpretive responses to evaluative and corrective responses. Furthermore, the level at which student thinking was utilized was found to be closely associated with how teachers responded to it. Interpretive responses were linked to higher levels of building on students’ ideas and leveraging them as resources for mathematical learning, whereas evaluative and corrective responses tended to limit opportunities for using those ideas to support the development of mathematical understanding. The study concluded that the educational value of student thinking is determined not by whether an idea is correct or incorrect, but by the teacher’s ability to leverage that thinking within classroom discussions in ways that foster the collective construction of mathematical understanding.
