[CHANGE2] Children's expectations about social change

Abstract: Groups often navigate situations with limited resources. Frequently, those with greater control of those resources divide them in their own favor. How do children think about addressing power imbalances between groups? A previous study initially investigated this question. We found that, when given the option of keeping the same group in charge, switching which group was in charge or making it so that all groups were in charge together, children most frequently prefer to make it so that everyone makes decisions together. This was especially true if the group that was previously in charge shared resources unequally. We also found strong order effects, such that children initially thought that both groups should be in charge, but in later iterations of the task said that only one group should be in charge. The following study is to investigate children’s underlying intuitions about each of the proposed changes. For example, which option do they believe is the fairest thing to do? What would be the easiest thing to do?
