Designing and simulating a real-time SCADA-based monitoring system for the Tis-Abay II hydroelectric power plant

Year: 2026
Type: article
Abstract: Automation is a method for monitoring and regulating systems, enhancing work quality by utilizing control systems, intelligent electronic devices, instrumentation, and new communication technologies. In the Tis-Abay II hydropower plant, the previous SCADA (H9000) has an outdated operating system and is currently not functional. Nowadays, due to the failure of the SCADA in the plant, all tasks are executed manually, which decreases the willingness of the operators to work day-to-day. The study allows real-time data acquisition, control, and monitoring through the Simatic WinCC Runtime Advanced SCADA within the TIA Portal software for the Tis-Abay II hydroelectric power station. In the operational control segment, the control programs were developed, and a human-machine interface (HMI) was designed for configuration changes, parameter settings, and status indications. The new SCADA system was simulated and validated. The simulation results enable users to get historical data points across various time intervals, alarm operators for predefined events as per the identified real-time, and allow for insightful analysis and trend view identification when the generator runs at an output power of 36 MW, with a terminal voltage of 10.5 KV, a current of 2083.8 A, and reactive power of 13.4 MVAR.=
