Type: article
Abstract: Lymphoedema is defined as the chronic progressive build-up of lymph fluid in interstitial tissues due to impaired drainage or obstruction within the lymphatic system.Lymph is rich in proteins, immune cells, lipids and metabolic waste.Chronic accumulation of lymph in interstitial tissues results in chronic inflammation, tissue fibrosis and remodelling.[1] Lymphoedema is mainly classified based on underlying aetiology as either primary or secondary.Primary lymphoedema results from congenital or genetic abnormalities in the development of the lymphatic drainage system.Secondary lymphoedema results from surgery, radiation therapy, infection, trauma or malignancy around the affected region.
